What's the difference between a modem and a router?

A modem connects your home to your internet service provider — it’s the device that brings the internet into your house. A router takes that connection and distributes it to your devices through Wi-Fi or Ethernet cables. Many ISP-provided devices combine both functions into a single box, which is why the distinction often gets confused.

Walls, floors, metal appliances, and distance all weaken a Wi-Fi signal as it travels. Router placement has a bigger impact on coverage than most people realize — a router tucked in a closet or behind a TV will perform worse than one placed centrally and elevated. If you have a larger home, a mesh system or additional access point solves this more reliably than repositioning a single router.

DNS translates website names — like google.com — into the numerical addresses that computers use to find each other on the internet. Without DNS, you’d need to memorize strings of numbers instead of typing a name into your browser. Your router consults a DNS server dozens of times a minute without you noticing.

No — they protect against different things. A firewall monitors and controls traffic entering and leaving your network, acting as a checkpoint between your devices and the internet. Your device asks a DNS server to translate the website name into a numerical address. Once it has that address, your device sends a request to the server hosting that website. The server sends back the website’s files, which your browser assembles into the page you see. This entire process typically takes well under a second, even though several steps are happening behind the scenes.
