A typical cable internet plan might advertise 300 Mbps download alongside just 20 Mbps upload — a roughly 15-to-1 ratio. This made sense when most home internet use was overwhelmingly one-directional: loading webpages, watching videos, downloading the occasional file.

The way people actually use the internet has shifted significantly. Video calls, cloud backups, and content creation — uploading rather than just consuming — have all become routine parts of daily life for remote workers and creators alike. That historical imbalance between download and upload capacity hasn't fully caught up to how people use their connections today, which is exactly why upload bottlenecks show up so often in troubleshooting.

Video calls are the clearest everyday example. Sending your own video feed is an upload; receiving everyone else's video is a download. A connection with abundant download speed but limited upload can show everyone else perfectly while your own feed freezes or struggles — even though the overall plan looks fast on paper.
