Frequently asked Questions
How do you choose which products to recommend?
Every recommendation starts with the question: would I use this in a real home office or small business environment? We evaluate products based on security features, reliability, ease of configuration, firmware update frequency, and value for money. We don’t accept payment for placement or rankings — affiliate commissions are earned only when a reader makes a purchase, and they never influence which products we recommend.
How often are your buyer guides updated?
We update guides when manufacturers release significant new models, when security vulnerabilities are discovered in previously recommended products, or when better options become available at a given price point. We’re rolling out visible “last updated” dates on guides so you can see how current the information is at a glance.
Do I need to spend a lot to get a secure home office network?
No. Most of the security improvements that matter most are free — firmware updates, configuration changes, and DNS filtering cost nothing. Where hardware matters, solid options exist at every price point. Our budget networking guide covers the best options for home office users who want reliability without overspending.
What router features should I prioritize for remote work?
In order of importance: WPA3 support, automatic firmware updates, a proper guest network with device isolation, and QoS settings for traffic prioritization. Beyond that, Wi-Fi 6 support is worth having if you’re buying new hardware. Our router reviews cover each of these in detail with specific product recommendations.
Is a NAS system necessary for a home office?
Not necessary, but valuable for specific situations. If you generate large files — video, design work, client deliverables — a NAS provides local backup and file sharing that cloud storage alone doesn’t match for speed or cost efficiency. If your work is primarily document-based and cloud-based, a NAS is optional. Our NAS reviews help you decide which category you fall into.
Do I really need a UPS for my home office?
If you work from home full time, yes. A UPS gives your router, switch, and workstation enough battery backup to save your work and shut down cleanly during a power outage — and protects against power surges that can damage equipment. For most home offices, a mid-range unit in the 600–1000VA range is sufficient. Our UPS guide covers sizing and our top picks.
What is the difference between a router and an access point?
A router connects your network to the internet and manages traffic between devices. An access point extends your wireless coverage by adding additional Wi-Fi signal points — but it relies on your router for the internet connection and network management. In a small home office, a single good router is usually sufficient. In larger spaces or multi-floor setups, adding one or more access points dramatically improves coverage and performance.
Are the affiliate links on this page safe to use?
Yes. All affiliate links go directly to the retailer’s product page — typically Amazon, the manufacturer’s site, or a major electronics retailer. We use standard affiliate tracking links that earn us a small commission if you make a purchase. They don’t change the price you pay, don’t install anything on your device, and don’t redirect you to any third-party site. The full disclosure is at the top of this page.
