What Is DNS and Why Does It Matter?
Your network consults it dozens of times a minute, completely invisibly. Here's what it actually does, and why switching providers genuinely matters.

The Phone Book Analogy
Computers don't actually navigate the internet using names like "google.com." They use numbers — IP addresses, the same concept covered in Guide 1 of this series, just at internet scale instead of within your home. Every website lives at a numerical address, something like 142.250.80.46.
Nobody wants to memorize strings of numbers for every website they visit. DNS — Domain Name System — is the service that translates the name you type into the actual numerical address your device needs to find that site. It's functionally a phone book: you look up a name, and it gives you the number to actually dial.
It Happens Constantly, and Invisibly
Every single website you visit, every app that connects to the internet, and a fair amount of background activity on your devices all trigger a DNS lookup. This happens in a fraction of a second, dozens of times an hour without you ever noticing it's happening.
Your router is typically configured to use whatever DNS service your internet provider runs by default, unless you've changed it. That default works — your internet functions normally either way — but it's not the only option, and it's not necessarily the best one for privacy or security.
Why Your DNS Provider Actually Matters
Because every website you visit passes through a DNS lookup, whoever operates that DNS service can, in principle, see a list of every domain you've requested — even if they can't see the specific content on the page. Your ISP's default DNS service typically logs this activity as a matter of course.
Some DNS providers go further than simple translation. Quad9, for example, checks every requested domain against a list of known malicious sites and refuses to complete the lookup if there's a match — blocking access to known malware and phishing domains before your browser ever loads the page. This happens at the DNS level, before any other security software on your device would even get a chance to react.
This is why switching to a provider like Cloudflare or Quad9 is a recurring recommendation throughout this site — it's a free, five-minute change that improves both privacy and security, without requiring any new hardware or software.
