Upload Speed Explained for Creators
A 25 Mbps connection does not upload 25 megabytes per second. That one mix-up explains most of the confusion around this number.

Upload speed gets thrown around as a single number, as if it means the same thing whether you're hopping on a video call, going live on Twitch, or exporting a finished project to a client. It doesn't. Different creator activities need genuinely different amounts of upload bandwidth, and the number your internet plan advertises isn't measured the same way the file size on your computer is.
This guide untangles both of those things, so you can actually match your connection to what you're trying to do with it.

The Math Behind the Number
Internet speeds are measured in megabits per second, while file sizes are measured in megabytes — and there are eight bits in a byte. That means a 25 Mbps connection actually transfers around 3.125 megabytes per second, not 25. This single mix-up is behind a lot of the confusion people have about why an upload is taking so much longer than they expected.
It's also worth knowing that the number your provider advertises is a rated maximum, not a guarantee. Real-world upload speeds typically run somewhere around 70 to 85 percent of that rated number, due to normal network overhead and congestion. When planning around a specific number, it's worth using your actual measured speed from a speed test, not the number printed on your bill.
What Different Creator Activities Actually Need
A standard-definition or HD video call needs relatively little — roughly 1.5 to 3 Mbps is generally enough. A 4K video call is a much bigger jump, typically needing 10 to 20 Mbps to look genuinely smooth. Live streaming sits in its own range depending on resolution and frame rate: around 3 to 4 Mbps for 720p at 30 frames per second, 4 to 6 Mbps for 1080p at 30 frames per second, and 6 to 8 Mbps if you're pushing 1080p at 60 frames per second.
Collaborative editing is the outlier most creators don't plan for at all. Sharing raw 4K project files and proxies with a remote editor or team through a cloud platform can realistically require 50 to 100 Mbps to stay workable, since those files are considerably larger than anything a video call or stream is sending in real time. If you work with a remote editor on 4K footage, this is the number worth checking before assuming your existing connection is fine.
Why a Ten-Minute 4K Video Isn't a Ten-Minute Upload
A ten-minute video shot in 4K is commonly around three and a half gigabytes, once exported. Converted properly — remembering the bits-versus-bytes math from earlier — that's roughly 28 gigabits to move. At a real-world 25 Mbps upload speed, that's somewhere around 18 to 20 minutes just to get the file out the door, before a platform even begins processing it. At a slower connection, that same file can easily stretch past an hour. This is exactly the kind of gap that turns "just export and upload it" into a much longer night than expected, especially close to a deadline.
What to Actually Do With These Numbers
Match your plan to your most demanding regular activity, not your average one — if you occasionally collaborate on 4K projects, that number should drive your decision even if most days you're just live streaming at a much lower bitrate. And treat every number above as a floor, not a target, the same way we've emphasized elsewhere in this category: add real headroom on top, since real-world speeds already run below the advertised number before anything else on your network even competes for bandwidth.
Know your actual measured upload speed, not just the advertised one, and match your plan to your single most demanding regular activity — usually collaborative 4K work, if that's part of what you do. Everything else in your workflow will comfortably fit underneath that number.
