Dropped frames, specifically, come from the network — data that's ready to send but can't get out fast enough or reliably enough. The Bandwidth Math Most Streamers Skip
A common mistake is setting your streaming bitrate right at the edge of what your connection can technically deliver, which leaves zero margin for the natural fluctuation every real internet connection has. A more reliable target is upload bandwidth that's roughly one and a half to two times your actual streaming bitrate, not just barely above it. That gap is what absorbs the small, constant variation in real-world network performance without any of it reaching your stream as a visible drop.
What's Quietly Sharing Your Upload
Even a connection with plenty of theoretical bandwidth can starve mid-stream if something else on the network is competing for the same upload capacity — another household member uploading a large file, a cloud backup running in the background, or a device syncing footage right as you go live. Let the Encoder Adapt Instead of Disconnect
Most streaming software supports a setting, often called dynamic or adaptive bitrate, that automatically reduces stream quality for a moment during a brief network dip rather than disconnecting outright. Without it, a fixed bitrate that suddenly exceeds what your connection can deliver in that instant causes exactly the kind of hard stutter or drop viewers notice most. With it enabled, a brief rough patch shows up as a short dip in quality instead of a frozen screen — a meaningfully better outcome, and one that's often sitting disabled by default in your streaming software's advanced network settings.
Confirm your streaming bitrate sits well under your actual upload capacity, prioritize your streaming device with QoS, and enable dynamic bitrate if your software supports it. Those three settings, together, prevent the vast majority of network-caused dropped frames before they ever show up on stream.
