"My Wi-Fi is slow" is actually several different problems wearing the same complaint. Interference, congestion, distance, and aging hardware all produce the same frustrating symptom — but they have completely different causes, which means they need completely different fixes.

Interference
Wi-Fi travels over radio frequencies, and several common household items share those same frequencies. Microwave ovens are a notable culprit — they can cut Wi-Fi speed roughly in half while running, because they emit signals on the same 2.4 GHz band that older Wi-Fi devices use. Cordless phones, baby monitors, and some Bluetooth devices can contribute similarly.
Neighboring Wi-Fi networks are another major source, particularly in apartments and dense neighborhoods, where dozens of networks may be competing for the same limited set of channels. This is sometimes called channel overlap, and it's one of the most common, least obvious causes of consistently mediocre Wi-Fi in multi-unit housing.
Congestion
Your router has a finite amount of capacity to distribute, and every connected device draws from that same shared pool. A household with 20 or 30 connected devices — smartphones, laptops, smart home gadgets, streaming sticks — is asking far more of a router than a household with five or six.
Congestion is also time-dependent. Many neighborhoods experience genuinely slower service during evening peak hours, when everyone nearby is home and online simultaneously, putting strain on the broader infrastructure beyond just your own router.
Distance and Physical Obstruction
Wi-Fi signals weaken with distance and lose additional strength passing through walls, floors, and especially metal objects or appliances. A device two rooms away from your router, with a couple of walls in between, will reliably perform worse than the same device sitting next to the router — even though nothing about the network itself has changed. This is purely a function of physics, not a flaw in your setup.
Aging or Underpowered Hardware
A router is a small computer, and like any computer, it has processing limits. Older routers, or budget models designed for a smaller number of devices than you're actually connecting, can become a genuine bottleneck — struggling to keep up even when your internet plan itself is fast and your placement is good. This is a different problem from the three above, since no amount of repositioning or interference reduction fixes a router that's simply underpowered for the job.
