The Best Wi-Fi Placement Strategies

Moving a router a few feet has fixed more Wi-Fi problems, in my experience, than almost any setting ever has.

Router placement doesn't get the credit it deserves — it's invisible once it's decided, so nobody thinks to revisit it, even though it quietly shapes every single connection in the house.

The good news is that the underlying logic is simple once you understand it, even if the specific right spot looks different in every home.

Central, Elevated, Open — The Three Words That Matter Most

Nearly every placement recommendation traces back to these three principles. Central, because a router near the middle of the home shortens the average distance to every device rather than favoring the rooms nearby at the expense of everything else. Elevated, because a router sitting on the floor loses much of its signal into the ground and furniture around it — a foot or two of height, on a shelf or table, gives the signal a clearer path outward. Open, because a signal traveling in every direction needs room to actually travel; a spot with clear space on multiple sides beats a spot tucked against a wall, even if the wall spot is technically more central.

Why Cabinets and Closets Hurt More Than They Look Like They Should

Hiding a router in a cabinet feels like a harmless aesthetic choice, but it causes two separate problems at once. The obvious one is that the enclosure physically blocks signal from reaching the rest of the house. The less obvious one is heat: routers generate warmth as they run, and a confined space traps it. When a router overheats, it protects itself by throttling its own processing speed — meaning your device might show full signal bars while the actual connection is noticeably slower than it should be, for reasons that look nothing like a placement problem on the surface. If your Wi-Fi has ever felt randomly sluggish despite a strong-looking signal, an overheating router in a closed cabinet is worth checking before anything more complicated.

The Metal and Water Problem

Metal is genuinely one of the worst materials for Wi-Fi signal, reflecting or blocking radio waves rather than letting them pass through the way drywall or wood mostly does. That makes the kitchen one of the least forgiving rooms in the house for a router — full of metal appliances, and often a microwave that shares the same 2.4 GHz frequency your router may be using, creating direct interference whenever it runs. Fish tanks are a specific offender worth knowing by name, since they combine water and a metal frame into one especially effective signal blocker. None of these are reasons to panic if your router happens to be near one — they're reasons to move it a few feet if you have an easy alternative and you've been living with a dead zone that never quite made sense.

Multi-Story Homes Need a Different Rule

In a single-story home, the center of the living space is usually the right answer. In a two-story home, the center of the floor plan is only half the equation — height matters just as much. Wi-Fi signal actually travels downward more easily than it travels upward, since it radiates outward and slightly down from the antenna. That means a router placed on the second floor typically covers both levels better than the same router placed on the first floor would. Where that's not practical, a mid-level spot — near the ceiling downstairs, or in a central stairwell — is the next-best compromise. If your router has adjustable antennas, angling one antenna more vertically and one more horizontally gives you a reasonable balance of coverage across both a single floor and the levels above and below it.

When Placement Alone Isn't Enough

Even a perfectly placed router has limits, and a large home, an unusually shaped floor plan, or thick original construction can leave genuine dead zones no amount of repositioning will fully solve. A Realistic Standard to Aim For

Your router should be off the floor, out of any enclosed cabinet, away from the kitchen and large metal objects, and as close to the center of your actual living space as your setup allows. If it meets all four, placement is no longer your bottleneck.
