Public Wi-Fi Risks Explained Clearly

Public Wi-Fi is safer than it used to be. It's not safe. Here's the honest, non-alarmist version of what's actually still risky.

Public Wi-Fi advice has a credibility problem. For years, the standard line was that any coffee shop or airport network was one step away from total identity theft, and the only solution was an always-on VPN. That advice was overstated even when it was written, and it's more outdated now than ever.

Here's the more honest version: the internet has changed in ways that genuinely reduce risk. The vast majority of websites now use HTTPS encryption by default, which means someone sitting nearby on the same network generally can't read your traffic the way they could a decade ago. That part of the old fear is largely outdated.

But "largely outdated" isn't the same as "no longer a concern." Real risks remain, they're just different from what most public Wi-Fi advice describes. This guide walks through what's actually still worth worrying about, and what isn't.

This guide is for remote workers, travelers, and anyone who regularly connects to Wi-Fi outside their home or office — coffee shops, airports, hotels, coworking spaces, and similar locations.

What's Actually Less Risky Than People Think

HTTPS encryption now covers the overwhelming majority of web traffic. When you see the lock icon in your browser's address bar, the data traveling between your device and that website is encrypted — meaning someone else on the same Wi-Fi network can't simply read what you're sending or receiving, even on a completely open network with no password.

This is a genuine improvement, and it means the classic image of a hacker "sniffing" your banking password out of the air at a coffee shop is far less realistic than it used to be, provided the site you're using has HTTPS enabled — which the vast majority do.

What's Still Genuinely Risky

Evil twin networks

An attacker sets up a hotspot with a name nearly identical to the legitimate one — "Airport_Free_WiFi" instead of "Airport-WiFi-Free," or simply the exact same name as the real network. You connect without checking, and everything you do passes through their equipment first. This remains one of the most effective and common attacks because it exploits a habit, not a technical flaw: most people connect to whatever looks familiar without verifying.

Session hijacking

When you log into a service, your device receives a small file — a session token — that keeps you signed in without re-entering your password every time. If an attacker on the same network can capture that token, they can potentially access your account without ever knowing your password. This is a more realistic modern threat than password-sniffing, and it's not fully prevented by HTTPS alone.

Malicious captive portals

Captive portals are the login pages you see when you join hotel or airport Wi-Fi — "Click to agree to terms" pages. A fake version of one of these pages can be used to harvest credentials directly, since people are conditioned to enter information into them without much scrutiny.

Metadata and tracking

Even with HTTPS protecting the content of your traffic, the network operator can typically still see which domains you're visiting and for how long. For most people this is a privacy concern rather than a security one — but for business travelers handling sensitive work, it's worth knowing your activity isn't fully invisible just because individual pages are encrypted.

Verify the network name before connecting

Ask staff for the exact network name rather than guessing from the list on your device. This single habit defeats most evil twin attacks, since the fake network usually has a name that's close but not identical.

Use a VPN for anything sensitive

A VPN encrypts all of your traffic, not just the HTTPS-protected portion, which closes the gap around metadata visibility and adds protection against session hijacking attempts. It's not mandatory for casual browsing, but it's a sensible step before banking, accessing work systems, or handling anything sensitive on a network you don't control.

Use your phone's hotspot when it matters most

For genuinely sensitive activity — wire transfers, password changes, confidential work — your cellular connection is generally safer than any public Wi-Fi network, encrypted or not. If your phone plan allows it, this is the simplest way to sidestep the entire category of public Wi-Fi risk for the moments that matter most.

Turn off auto-connect and forget networks after use

Devices set to automatically join known or open networks can connect to a malicious lookalike without your knowledge. Disable auto-connect for public networks, and remove a network from your device's memory once you're done with it, especially while traveling.

Two-factor authentication is particularly valuable here — even if a session token or password is somehow compromised on a public network, 2FA gives an attacker another obstacle to clear before they can actually access your account.

Hotel Wi-Fi Deserves Extra Caution

Hotel networks carry a specific risk profile worth calling out separately. Connections often last several days rather than the twenty minutes you might spend at a coffee shop, giving an attacker a much longer window. The guest population is mixed and largely unverified, and hotel networking equipment is frequently older and less consistently patched than you'd expect from a business serving travelers.

If you're staying somewhere for an extended trip and need reliable, more controlled connectivity, a personal travel router paired with your own mobile data plan is a reasonable investment — it gives you a private network wherever you go rather than relying on whatever the venue provides.
