How to Protect Smart Devices on Your Network

Smart devices are different from the rest of your home network in a way that's worth understanding clearly. Your laptop runs a full operating system with real security infrastructure behind it. Your smart plug, your camera, your thermostat — most of these run stripped-down embedded software, built by manufacturers who prioritized getting the product to market over building in real security. That's not a conspiracy theory; it's a documented, industry-wide pattern.

Why Smart Devices Are a Different Kind of Risk
Three statistics tell the real story here. 35% of consumer IoT devices still ship with default usernames and passwords — credentials that are publicly catalogued online, making unauthorized access close to trivial for anyone running automated scanning tools. 33% of IoT devices run outdated software with no practical update mechanism, and even where updates exist, only about a quarter of users install them regularly. And 60% of documented IoT breaches trace back specifically to unpatched firmware.
Put together, this means a meaningful share of smart devices in the average home are sitting exposed, with credentials anyone could look up and software that hasn't been updated in years. Tools like Shodan index millions of internet-exposed IoT devices, turning what used to require real effort to find into something searchable by anyone.
What a Compromised Smart Device Actually Means
It's worth being specific about the actual consequences, since "your smart plug could be hacked" sounds abstract until you know what that means in practice.
One outcome is direct: a compromised camera gives an attacker visibility into your home, a compromised smart lock affects physical security, and a compromised smart speaker has access to whatever it's been listening for. The second outcome is less obvious but more common: a compromised device on your main network can be used as a bridge to reach your computers, your files, and anything else connected to that same network.
There's also a third outcome that has nothing to do with your own data: attackers recruit vulnerable, internet-exposed smart devices into botnets — networks of compromised devices used to launch large-scale attacks against other targets entirely. The Mirai botnet and its successors are the most documented examples of this pattern, built largely from compromised cameras and home routers with default credentials still intact.
The Five Things That Apply to Every Smart Device
1. Change every default password, on the device and the companion app
This is the single highest-leverage fix, given that over a third of devices ship with default credentials never changed. Check both the device itself (if it has a local admin interface) and the manufacturer's app account used to control it.
2. Enable two-factor authentication wherever the manufacturer offers it
Increasingly common on camera and smart lock apps specifically. It blocks the vast majority of unauthorized login attempts even if a password is somehow compromised — the same principle covered in Guide 4 of our Home Network Security series, applied to smart device accounts.
3. Move every smart device onto a separate network from your main devices

A guest network or dedicated IoT segment means a compromised smart device can't reach your computers, your files, or your work data — it contains the damage to a single segment instead of letting it spread.
4. Enable automatic updates, or schedule manual checks if auto-update isn't available
Given that 60% of breaches trace back to unpatched firmware, this single habit closes the largest documented gap. For devices without automatic updates, a monthly check through the manufacturer's app takes a few minutes per device.
5. Disable features you don't actually use
Remote access, voice control integrations you've never set up, additional connectivity protocols sitting enabled by default — each unused feature is a surface that doesn't need to exist. Review your device's full settings menu once, not just the features you actively interact with.
Check the manufacturer's update track record
Before purchasing a new smart device, look at whether the manufacturer publishes a security contact and has a documented history of releasing firmware updates. Devices with long lifecycles — some smart home categories run 10 to 25 years before replacement — but no planned end-of-support security commitment are a long-term liability, even if they work perfectly on day one.
