How to Prioritize Work Traffic on Your Network

Your router doesn't know your video call matters more than a background backup — unless you tell it. Here's exactly how to do that.

Quality of Service, or QoS, came up briefly in Guide 1 of this series and again in Guide 4 as a fix for video call problems. This guide is the full walkthrough — what QoS actually does, the different ways routers implement it, and exactly how to set it up so your work traffic wins when your network gets busy.

By default, your router treats every device and every type of traffic equally. It doesn't know that your video call matters more than a phone backing up photos in the background. QoS is how you tell it.

Who This Guide Is For

This guide is for remote workers sharing a network with other people or devices, who want a permanent, automatic fix rather than manually closing apps before every important call.

Two Ways QoS Actually Works

Most consumer routers offer QoS in one of two forms, and understanding the difference matters for getting genuinely good results rather than a partial fix.

Device-based prioritization gives a specific device — your work laptop, identified by its MAC address — priority over everything else. It's simple to set up, but it treats all of that device's traffic equally, including any low-priority background activity happening on the same machine.

Application-based prioritization instead prioritizes a type of traffic — video conferencing, for instance — regardless of which device it's coming from. This is generally the better option when your router supports it, since it targets the actual traffic that matters rather than everything a device happens to be doing.

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Log into your router's admin panel and look for QoS under Advanced, Traffic Management, or Bandwidth Control, depending on your brand.
  2. Run a speed test to get your actual current download and upload speeds.
  3. Enter those speeds into the QoS bandwidth fields, but set them to roughly 85-90% of your measured speeds rather than the exact number — this gives QoS room to actually manage traffic instead of operating at the very edge of capacity.
  4. Choose your priority method: by application (video conferencing, VoIP) if your router supports it, or by device (your work laptop's MAC address) if it doesn't.
  5. Set your work traffic or work device to the highest priority tier available.
  6. Save and test during a moment of actual household congestion — have someone stream or download something while you're on a call, and confirm the difference is noticeable.

Some newer routers include a dedicated "Work-From-Home" category directly in their QoS application list, which simplifies this considerably if your router supports it — check your specific options before assuming you need to configure something more general.

Consider Time-of-Day Rules If Your Router Supports Them

Some routers let you assign different priority levels depending on the time of day — work devices prioritized during business hours, then automatically shifting priority to streaming or gaming devices in the evening. If your router offers this, it removes the need to choose a single static priority that's a compromise between work hours and personal time.

This is a "nice to have" rather than essential — a static work-hours priority works fine for most households, but it's worth checking your specific router's QoS settings page for this option since it removes one more thing you'd otherwise need to think about.

When QoS Won't Help

QoS manages how your existing bandwidth is allocated — it cannot create bandwidth that doesn't exist. If your internet plan's upload speed is genuinely insufficient for your needs even with nothing else competing for it, QoS won't fix that; you'll need to address the underlying connection, as covered in Guide 4 of this series.
