How to Know if Your Network Is Vulnerable
You don't need to be a security professional to find out where your network stands. A 30-minute self-audit tells you almost everything you need to know.

By this point in the series, you've likely worked through several guides — securing your router, fixing common mistakes, building good habits. A reasonable question at this stage is: how do I actually know if it worked?
You don't need expensive software or a networking certification to answer that. A genuine, useful self-audit takes about 30 minutes and uses tools that are either built into your router or available for free. This guide walks through exactly how to do it.
I want to set expectations honestly: this audit will tell you about the most common and most exploited weaknesses. It won't catch everything a dedicated penetration tester would find. For the vast majority of home networks and small offices, it catches what actually matters.
This guide is for anyone who wants to verify their network's security rather than just assume it. It works whether you've completed every guide in this series or you're starting fresh and want to know where you stand first.
Check 1: Your Connected Device List
Log into your router's admin panel and find the Connected Devices page. This is your network's guest list — every device currently using your Wi-Fi or plugged into your router.
What you're looking for: Anything you don't recognize. Make a list of every device name and check it against what you actually own. If you're unsure whether a device belongs, check with anyone else in your household before assuming the worst — it's often a forgotten gadget, not an intruder.
Result: If every device is accounted for, you pass this check. If you find something unfamiliar, change your Wi-Fi password immediately and work through Guide 2's router security checklist before continuing.
Check 2: Firmware and Update Status
In your router's admin panel, find the Firmware or Software Update section and check the current version against the latest available. While you're there, check the same for any smart home devices through their respective apps.
Result: If your router and major smart devices are within a few months of the latest firmware, you pass. If anything is significantly out of date — six months or more — update it now, and if a device hasn't received an update in over a year, check whether the manufacturer still supports it.
Check 3: Default Settings Still in Place
Check three specific settings in your router's admin panel: the admin username and password, the Wi-Fi network name (SSID), and whether UPnP and WPS are still enabled.
Result: If you've changed the admin credentials, renamed your network, and disabled UPnP and WPS, you pass this check. If any of these are still at factory defaults, this is the highest-priority fix on this entire list — work through Guide 1 and Guide 2 before doing anything else.
Check 4: Network Segmentation
Check whether your guest network is enabled, and if it is, confirm which devices are actually using it. The goal is for smart home devices, visitor devices, and anything you don't fully trust to be separated from your computers and work files.
Result: If your smart devices and guest traffic are isolated from your main devices, you pass. If everything is on one flat network, this is worth fixing — it's one of the most effective single changes you can make, covered in detail in Guide 1.
Check 5: Use a Free Network Scanning Tool
A dedicated scanning app gives you a more complete picture than your router's admin panel alone — including device details and alerts the basic device list doesn't show.
Fing remains the most widely recommended free option for home users in 2026 — a mobile and desktop app that scans your network, identifies every connected device by brand and type, and alerts you the moment something new joins. It requires no technical background to use.
Result: Run a scan and review what it shows. Cross-reference the device list against Check 1 above, and investigate anything flagged as new or unrecognized.
If you want a deeper technical audit — open port scanning, packet-level analysis, formal vulnerability scanning — that level of detail requires tools built for IT professionals (Nmap, OpenVAS, Nessus) and a fair amount of networking knowledge to interpret correctly. For small businesses handling sensitive data, a periodic professional audit is worth the investment. For most home networks, the five checks above cover what genuinely matters.
