Choosing Hardware That Ages Well

The router still turning on isn't the same as the router still being safe to use. Here's what actually determines how long a piece of network hardware should stay in service.

I still run into people using a router from a decade ago, completely confident it's fine because the lights are on and the internet works. I get the logic — if it's not broken, why touch it? But "still working" and "still safe" are two different questions, and a router can quietly stop being the second one while still doing the first one just fine.

This guide is about choosing hardware in a way that doesn't put you in that position five years from now without realizing it.

"Still Works" Isn't the Right Question

A consumer router has a realistic functional life of around three to five years before things start wearing down — heat stress on the internal components, capacitors aging, the usual story for any small computer that runs nonstop, year-round, in a warm corner of someone's house. But the hardware wearing out is rarely what actually retires a router. The support ending is.

When a manufacturer stops releasing firmware updates for your specific model, your router stops getting patched for newly discovered vulnerabilities — even though it still powers on, still blinks its lights, still connects your devices. From the outside, nothing looks different. From the inside, it's a door that used to lock and quietly doesn't anymore.

Check the Support Window Before You Buy It, Not After

Here's something most people never think to ask while standing in front of two routers that look nearly identical: how long will the manufacturer actually keep updating this thing? It's not a trick question, and reputable brands answer it if you check their support pages. Budget models often get cut off after about two years. The better-supported brands will give you five, sometimes seven.

That difference matters more than almost any spec on the box. A $60 router with a two-year support window is, in practical terms, more expensive over time than a $150 router with a five-year one — you'll just pay the second bill in a different currency: risk.

Buy a Little Ahead of Where You Are

Wireless standards move forward roughly every few years — Wi-Fi 6 in 2019, Wi-Fi 6E not long after, Wi-Fi 7 arriving more recently. A router built for the standard right at the edge of what's current tends to stay relevant longer than one that was already a step behind the day you bought it.

I'm not telling you to chase the newest thing the moment it launches — that's its own kind of waste. I'm saying buy with a little headroom, the same way you'd buy a pair of shoes with a touch of room to grow rather than ones that fit perfectly today and pinch in six months.

Replace Your ISP's Router. Seriously.

If you're still using whatever box your internet provider handed you on install day, this is worth a moment of honest thought. ISPs are slow to push updates because their priority is keeping the broader network stable, not keeping your individual router airtight. They'll happily leave you on aging hardware indefinitely as long as your Wi-Fi seems "fine."

Owning your own router means you control the update schedule, the settings, and exactly when it gets retired — instead of leaving that decision to a company whose incentives don't quite line up with yours.

A Number Worth Sitting With

A recent survey found that 84% of people have never once updated their router's firmware, and 81% had never changed the default admin password. Signs It's Actually Time to Replace

None of these alone means much. A few of them together is your answer.

  • No firmware updates available for over a year, with nothing on the manufacturer's site explaining why
  • Frequent disconnections that a reboot only fixes temporarily
  • The router running noticeably hot even in a well-ventilated spot
  • Newer devices struggling to connect properly while older ones connect fine
  • Speeds well below your plan even right next to the router, with nothing else explaining the gap
