DSL has a different limitation: upload speed there depends heavily on the physical distance between your home and your provider's equipment, which is a constraint no amount of new hardware can fix. Fixed wireless and satellite connections have their own inherent upload ceilings that are largely outside your control as well. Knowing which category your connection falls into sets realistic expectations before you start troubleshooting anything else.
The Free Fixes: What's Quietly Eating Your Upload
Before assuming your connection itself is the problem, it's worth checking what else might be using your upload bandwidth without you noticing. Cloud backup services, security cameras constantly uploading footage, and automatic software updates all consume upload capacity quietly in the background, and any one of them can be the reason an important upload or video call struggles at exactly the wrong moment. Pausing or scheduling these around the times you actually need upload capacity is a genuinely free fix that solves this more often than people expect.

If you're on cable internet and you've tried everything above with little improvement, it's worth asking your provider specifically about Mid-Split or High-Split modem upgrades — newer technology that's actively rebalancing how much bandwidth cable networks allocate to uploads, and it may be available in your area even if it isn't advertised prominently. If you own your modem rather than renting one from your provider, checking whether it supports this upgrade, or replacing it with one that does, can make a genuine difference. For DSL, fixed wireless, or satellite connections, be realistic about what hardware changes can and can't accomplish — if your upload need has grown past what your connection type was ever built to offer, checking whether fiber has become available in your area is often the more honest answer than continuing to troubleshoot equipment that was never the actual bottleneck.
Rule out background bandwidth use and try a wired connection before assuming you need new equipment or a new plan. If those genuinely don't move the number, know whether your connection type — cable, DSL, fixed wireless, or satellite — has a real ceiling that no setting will get you past, and address that directly rather than continuing to troubleshoot around it.
