Wi-Fi Interference Explained

If your Wi-Fi glitches every time the microwave runs, that's not a coincidence. It's a diagnosis.

We ruled out bufferbloat in the last guide as one specific cause of stutter. Interference is a different problem entirely, and it comes in two forms people rarely distinguish between: other Wi-Fi networks competing for the same channel, and everyday household devices that aren't Wi-Fi at all but happen to broadcast on the same frequency. Knowing which one you're dealing with changes what actually fixes it.

The good news is that both kinds leave fairly obvious clues, once you know what to look for.

Who This Guide Is For

Anyone dealing with inconsistent Wi-Fi that doesn't seem tied to distance or coverage, especially in an apartment, dense neighborhood, or a home full of other wireless gadgets.

Two Very Different Kinds of Interference

The first kind is Wi-Fi interfering with Wi-Fi — your network and your neighbor's network, or several devices in your own home, competing for the same slice of radio spectrum. The second kind is everything else: microwaves, Bluetooth speakers, baby monitors, and cordless phones, none of which are Wi-Fi devices at all, but which happen to broadcast in the same 2.4 GHz range your router may be using. Both produce the same symptoms — drops, slowdowns, inconsistent connections — which is exactly why they get confused with each other, even though the fixes are different.

The Household Gadget Kind

This one has a genuinely useful diagnostic tell: if your connection glitches at the exact moment someone turns on the microwave, or specifically while a Bluetooth speaker or baby monitor is active, that timing is the diagnosis. These devices aren't slowing your internet down in general — they're briefly clogging the same 2.4 GHz frequency your Wi-Fi is trying to use, and the effect disappears the moment the device turns off. This almost never affects 5 GHz or 6 GHz connections, since those bands sit in different, much less crowded parts of the spectrum. If this is what's happening, moving affected devices onto the 5 GHz band, or physically relocating your router away from the kitchen and other frequent offenders, usually resolves it without needing anything more complicated.

The Crowded Neighborhood Kind

This one shows up differently: consistently patchy Wi-Fi with no obvious trigger, especially in an apartment building or a dense block of houses where dozens of networks are all broadcasting nearby. The 2.4 GHz band only has three channels that don't overlap with each other — numbered 1, 6, and 11 — and in a crowded building, it's common for several networks to end up sharing the same one, or spilling into each other's neighboring channels. Either version creates real, measurable slowdown, even though nothing about your own setup has changed.

The 5 GHz and increasingly 6 GHz bands are considerably less crowded, since interference there tends to come only from other Wi-Fi networks rather than the household gadgets that also clutter 2.4 GHz — one more reason to move as many devices as reasonably possible onto the higher bands, something we touched on back in our first guide in this category.

Stop Guessing — Actually Look at What's Happening

Free Wi-Fi scanner apps exist specifically to replace guesswork with an actual picture of your local airwaves — showing which channels neighboring networks are using, how crowded 2.4 GHz is in your specific location, and whether the problem is truly interference rather than something else entirely, like a dead zone from poor placement. Once you can see which channel is least congested, manually setting your router to one of the three non-overlapping 2.4 GHz channels — 1, 6, or 11 — rather than leaving it on whatever the factory default happened to be, is a genuinely free fix that solves this specific problem more directly than almost anything else in this guide.

A Realistic Standard to Aim For

Notice whether your Wi-Fi trouble tracks with a specific household device turning on, or shows up consistently regardless of what's running. That single observation tells you which of the two problems you actually have, and points you straight at the right fix instead of a guess.
