How to Reduce Buffering and Lag

Your internet plan is probably fast enough. The stutter you're fighting usually lives somewhere else entirely.

Coverage was the focus of the last two guides — getting a strong signal everywhere in the house. This one assumes you've already got that, and addresses a different kind of frustration: the connection that shows full bars, tests fast, and still stutters the moment someone else in the house starts a download, or freezes mid-call for no obvious reason.

That specific pattern has a name, and once you know it, it's genuinely one of the more satisfying home network problems to actually fix.

Who This Guide Is For

Anyone whose connection tests fast but still stutters, lags, or buffers under real everyday use — especially when someone else on the network starts something bandwidth-heavy.

The Symptom That Gives It Away

The problem is called bufferbloat, and it has a distinctive fingerprint once you know to look for it: your connection feels perfectly fine when idle, then latency spikes dramatically the moment the network gets busy — someone starts a large download, a phone kicks off a cloud backup, a video call freezes right as another device starts streaming. Free tools like the Waveform Bufferbloat Test measure exactly this, comparing your latency at rest against your latency under load and grading the result. A grade of A or B means your router is managing traffic well. A C, D, or F means it isn't, and that gap is very likely what's actually behind your stutter.

Why More Speed Doesn't Fix It

This is the part that trips people up, because the instinct is to upgrade to a faster plan. Bufferbloat has nothing to do with how fast your connection is and everything to do with how your router manages a busy moment. Think of it like a busy highway: when traffic picks up, your router tries to help by holding extra data in a waiting queue rather than dropping any of it. That sounds considerate, but if the queue is larger than it needs to be, packets sit in line far longer than they should, and anything time-sensitive — a video call, a game, a voice call — ends up stuck behind a queue full of a completely unrelated download. A gigabit connection with a poorly managed queue will stutter exactly the same way a much slower connection would.

QoS and SQM Are Not the Same Fix

Most routers offer Quality of Service, or QoS, which lets you tell the router which devices or traffic types matter most. It helps, but it doesn't actually solve the underlying problem — it just decides who suffers first when the queue is already too full, rather than keeping the queue from filling up in the first place.

Smart Queue Management, or SQM, is the feature that actually addresses bufferbloat directly, and it's worth looking for by name in your router's settings. SQM works by deliberately capping your connection slightly below its true maximum — typically around 85 to 90 percent of your measured speed — which keeps the queue from ever reaching the point where it backs up. The tradeoff is a small, usually unnoticeable reduction in peak speed in exchange for a dramatically more consistent, lower-latency connection under load. Many ISP-provided routers don't include SQM at all, which is one of the more common reasons a router upgrade genuinely helps here, even though the reason has nothing to do with raw speed.

Wi-Fi Adds Its Own Layer on Top

Wireless connections carry an additional source of delay that wired connections don't: a mechanism sometimes called airtime fairness, which makes faster and slower devices on the same network take turns transmitting rather than compete freely. It's a reasonable design choice overall, but it adds its own layer of unpredictable timing on top of whatever bufferbloat is already happening at the router. For anything genuinely latency-sensitive — a gaming PC, a video call station you rely on regularly — connecting via Ethernet removes this specific source of delay entirely, leaving only the router-level queue management to deal with.

When It's Not Bufferbloat At All

It's worth being honest that not every lag spike is this specific problem. The tell is whether latency is fine at rest and only spikes under load — if that's the pattern, bufferbloat and SQM are exactly what you're looking for. If latency is consistently poor even with nothing else happening on the network, the cause is more likely to be something we've already covered elsewhere in this category: Wi-Fi interference, a router placed somewhere that's actively hurting its signal, or hardware simply old enough that it struggles with how many devices are connected today. Testing at both idle and under load is the fastest way to tell which problem you're actually solving.

A Realistic Standard to Aim For

Run a bufferbloat test both idle and under load. If your grade under load is a C or worse, look for Smart Queue Management in your router's settings, or consider a router that supports it. That single setting resolves more real-world stutter than switching to a faster internet plan almost ever does.

Where to Go From Here
