Why Your Wi-Fi Feels Slow

Most slow Wi-Fi problems aren't your internet plan's fault. They're sitting in settings and habits you can fix this afternoon.

The instinct when Wi-Fi feels slow is to call the internet company and ask for a faster plan. Sometimes that's genuinely the answer. Far more often, in my experience, the plan was never the problem — the signal between your router and your device is. That's a completely different thing to fix, and the good news is that most of the fixes cost nothing and take a few minutes each.

This guide picks up right where our explanation of what causes slow Wi-Fi left off. That guide covers the "why." This one is entirely about the "what to actually do about it."

Anyone whose Wi-Fi feels slower than it should, who wants a clear list of what to actually try — in the order most likely to fix it — before assuming they need to pay for a faster plan.

Start With the Reset You're Probably Skipping

It sounds too simple to matter, but a router that's been running for weeks or months without a restart is genuinely one of the most common causes of gradual slowdown. Memory fills up, temporary glitches accumulate, and a fresh boot clears all of it. Unplug the modem and router, wait about thirty seconds, plug the modem back in first, let it fully reconnect, then plug the router back in. Doing this roughly once a month, as a habit rather than a last resort, prevents a surprising share of "why is this suddenly so slow" moments before they start.

Move It Before You Replace It

Router placement is the fix people skip most often, and it's frequently the one with the biggest payoff. A router tucked in a closet, hidden behind a TV, or sitting on the floor in a corner is fighting an uphill battle before it even starts. Move it toward the center of your home, up off the floor, out in the open rather than boxed into a cabinet, and away from microwaves, cordless phones, and large metal objects like filing cabinets or refrigerators. I've seen people move a router ten feet and watch their speed test numbers noticeably improve — no new hardware, no new plan, just a better spot. We'll go deeper on placement specifically in the next guide in this category, but even a rough version of this fix is worth doing today.

Pick the Right Band on Purpose

Most modern routers broadcast on two or three bands — 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and increasingly 6 GHz on newer hardware — and most people never think about which one their devices are actually using. The 2.4 GHz band reaches farther and passes through walls more easily, but it's slower and shares its limited channels with practically every neighboring router, baby monitor, and cordless phone nearby. The 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands are noticeably faster and far less crowded, at the cost of shorter range.

If your router uses separate network names for each band, connect laptops, streaming devices, and anything else that sits reasonably close to the router on 5 GHz. Save 2.4 GHz for devices that are far away or don't need much bandwidth — a smart thermostat doesn't care which band it's on, but your work laptop does. If your router uses one combined name and automatically decides for you, it's still worth checking the admin panel occasionally to see which band your important devices actually landed on.

Give Your Router a Job List, Not a Free-for-All

Without any instructions, your router treats every device's traffic as equally important — a background system update downloading on a tablet nobody's using gets the same priority as the video call you're actually on. Most routers include a Quality of Service, or QoS, setting that lets you tell it otherwise. Turning it on and giving priority to the device you actually work from can noticeably smooth out video calls and browsing, especially in a house with several people online at once. It's also worth glancing at your router's connected device list occasionally — it's not unusual to find something eating bandwidth in the background that nobody remembers connecting.

Firmware and Age: The Fixes People Skip Longest

Firmware updates aren't just a security chore — manufacturers regularly tune performance and fix bugs that affect real-world speed, and most routers won't apply these updates on their own. Check the admin panel's Administration or System section for an update option every few months. And if your router is more than four or five years old, it's worth an honest look at what Wi-Fi standard it actually supports. A router built before Wi-Fi 6 was standard will genuinely struggle once you're running more than eight or ten devices at once, no amount of settings tweaking will fully make up for that gap, and at some point replacing it is the actual fix rather than one more thing to configure around.

A Realistic Standard to Aim For

Before spending money on anything, you should be able to say you've restarted your equipment, checked your router's placement, confirmed which band your important devices are using, and updated your firmware — all in one sitting, all for free. Most slow Wi-Fi complaints resolve somewhere in that list.
