Matter is the smart home industry's attempt at a universal standard, letting devices from different ecosystems — Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa — work together more seamlessly. Routers with Matter support, often paired with Thread, can act as a bridge between ecosystems. If you mix device brands across different platforms, this is worth checking before you buy.

Higher-end routers increasingly support five or more SSIDs, which gives you room for IoT, guests, and your main devices without compromise.
Sufficient simultaneous connection capacity
A smart home with 30 or more connected devices needs a router whose hardware can actually handle that load without slowdown — this is different from raw speed and comes down to processing power and memory inside the router itself. Budget routers sometimes advertise impressive speed numbers while struggling under genuinely high device counts. Look for reviews that specifically test performance under realistic device loads, not just peak speed in ideal conditions.
Some premium routers bundle their strongest security features — advanced threat protection, content filtering — behind an ongoing annual subscription rather than including them in the upfront price. This isn't necessarily a bad deal, but factor the full ongoing cost into your comparison rather than judging purely on the sticker price, since two routers at the same upfront cost can have very different total costs of ownership over a few years.
