Backup Internet Strategies for Remote Workers

Tier 2: Dedicated cellular backup plan (moderate cost, moderate effort)

For remote workers where outages are a genuine income risk, a dedicated no-contract cellular backup plan — separate from your phone, typically running $30-80 per month depending on speed and data allowance — gives you consistent performance without competing with your phone's battery or data. These plans are usually month-to-month with no long-term commitment, which makes sense given you're paying for something you hope to rarely use.

Tier 3: Automatic dual-WAN failover (highest reliability, most setup)

For anyone whose income depends heavily on uninterrupted connectivity, a dual-WAN router continuously monitors your primary connection and automatically switches to the cellular backup the moment it detects a failure — typically within 10 to 30 seconds, with the full switch completing in under a minute. This removes the human element entirely: you don't have to notice the outage or remember to activate anything. The tradeoff is more setup complexity and a higher upfront cost for the dual-WAN-capable hardware.

If cellular coverage at your address is weak or unavailable, satellite internet becomes the relevant backup option instead. Check actual coverage and speed at your specific address before committing to any backup option, since marketed coverage maps don't always reflect real-world performance at a given location.

Don't Forget the Manual Plan

Whatever tier you choose, also have a simple manual fallback in mind: the nearest coffee shop or coworking space with reliable Wi-Fi, and your client or employer's contact information saved somewhere that doesn't depend on your home network being up. Technology backups can fail too — a known physical fallback location costs nothing and covers the edge case where your backup itself has a problem.
